Job Summary:
Fessler and Bowman’s Director of Estimating provides overall strategic planning and leadership to the Estimating team. The Director of Estimating is responsible for supporting the training of other estimators and employees, establishing and implementing standardized procedures and processes, and for reviewing and recommending changes to IT systems and programs used by the department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, implementing procedures, reviewing estimates, negotiating contracts, managing subcontractors, and maintaining strong relationships clients, employees, and sub-contractors.  
The Director of Estimating performs a variety of duties, including, but not limited to:
Leadership and Development
  • Works closely with individual estimators, helping identify areas for improvement and applicable development plans
  • Works within the collaborative team-based proposal process, handling the estimating technicalities but also helping manage the team as a whole
  • Assigns estimating responsibilities, including assigning of specific projects, to members of the team, based on experience, strengths, and current availability of resources
  • Builds effective relationships with customers, design team, specialty contractors, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support company core values and meets or exceeds the customer's expectations.
Subject Matter Expertise
  • Reviews estimates for other estimating team members
  • Builds a historical database to support the development of budgets on future projects
  • Reinforces consistent utilization of Company estimating systems, programs, and policies, to ensure minimization of risk and ease of information transfer throughout the Company
  • Supports the determination of whether to pursue a project by participating in the “Go/No-Go” process
  • Continually reviews and updates systems, software tools, technology, and innovative practices that will support the Company’s overall success
  • Identifies project-specific risk issues and the potential impact to Fessler and Bowman, as well as potential strategies to help mitigate those risks
  • Prepares conceptual budgets for projects that have not been fully developed
  • Creates complete project budgets once a project is being actively bid
  • Assembles documentation for claims and prepare presentations for same
  • Conducts a thorough and detailed project take-off, assembling all quantities, man hour requirements, etc
  • Solicits subcontractor and supplier pricing, reviewing prequalification requirements, and determining the best qualified subcontractors
  • Reviews project plans and specifications and communicates with project stakeholders and internal resources to confirm the scope of the project
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Construction Management preferred; OR equivalent experience
  • 15+ years’ experience in structural concrete
  • Estimating medium-to-large commercial and industrial projects that include:
    • Heavy concrete (foundation, structural slabs, cast-in-place (CIP) concrete)
    • Vertical concrete construction
    • Estimating experience with projects ranging from $250,000 to $50,000,000
    • Experience in varied construction markets, including industrial and commercial
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Primary work area is a controlled office environment but will occasionally be exposed to a construction site setting or being out in adverse weather conditions without temperature or other environmental controls and subject to ambient weather conditions. The position will require occasional project site visits as well.
Classification & Compensation
  • The position is full-time and exempt.
  • The pay range varies, depending on experience, skills, abilities, and length of service with the Company
  • This position is eligible for the Company’s discretionary profit sharing program
